About the Workshops
In response to feedback received from our partner programs, First Literacy has increased its support of Adult Basic Education in Greater Boston by facilitating professional development workshops for the staff members of ABE programs in the area. The goal of these workshops is to help strengthen the ABE programs by encouraging the sharing of knowledge, experience, and proven best practices between staff from different programs. Workshops are co-led by First Literacy and ABE program professionals in Greater Boston, with stipends provided for workshop co-leaders, and are designed for ABE teachers, program administrators, coordinators, and counselors.
Our Mission
First Literacy opens life-changing educational opportunities for adults and their families. Literacy, functional English skills, and high school credentials are essential in our society.

History of First Literacy
Created in 1988 as the Boston Adult Literacy Fund by a group of corporate and community leaders, we became First Literacy on our 20th anniversary. The name First Literacy expresses our broader geographical presence, our support of children’s and family literacy, and the greater sphere of our activities. We have deep community roots that allow us to: improve families’ literacy and English skills, help adults achieve their high school credentials, and support graduates who want to attend college.
